MORNING WEAR

A 90's innovation for wedding parties sees it being perfectly acceptable to have the groom and best man in formal morning attire with the fathers co-ordinating in the more informal lounge jacket style. In another refreshing move morning dress is proving popular for afternoon ceremonies. The choice in our morning dress range at BLACKTIE includes traditional grey tails in pure wool and frock coats in navy or black. For the groom with a debonair touch there is the suit with the same traditional cut but in onyx bird's eye weave pure wool cloth.

The ideal shirt for a formal wedding should be either plain white or with a self stripe and should have double cuffs. If you choose a wing collar shirt, a cravat will set it off best.

Lace-up shoes are the order of the day and socks in co-ordinating black should be made of fine fibres such as silk or cotton. Gloves and top hat should be in black or grey, whichever matches the favoured six button double breasted waistcoat.

The semi formal lounge suit offers an ease of movement and is the perfect complement to any special oaccasion. It comes in black, silver grey, Ascot grey or navy and is worn with a choice of tie (often reflecting the bridesmaids colours) and a plain collar shirt.

EVENING WEAR

When the invitation stresses 'black tie' you know that immaculately tailored and elegantly understated evening-wear is called for. The standard item for any black tie occasion is the classic dinner jacket or 'tuxedo' which got its name from the venue (The Tuxedo Park Club, New York, USA) where Griswold Lorillard, a celebrated member of America's high society first presented it to the world at an exclusive white-tie and tails ball. But it took Prince Edward V11, Prince of Wales to make it acceptable.

At BLACKTIE our extensive collection of fine evening-wear is bound to include something to attract every gentlemanfrom the traditional to the less conventional. Those who favour the Wales' mode of dress will find single and double breasted dinner jackets with hand finished peaked lapels faced in silk.

Traditionally shoes and socks should be in black and your scarf should be fringed white silk. But there's no reason why you shouldn't take a leaf from Griswald's book and break with tradition. Express yourself by adding a splash print or 'theme' waistcoat with a matching bow tie. Or how about a cool crisp shirt with hand pleated embroidered panel?

MORNING WEAR WITH TAILCOAT

* Tie - Grey silk check or stripe. Club and regimental ties are worn if they co-ordinate with the outfit. Wear a cravat of similar colour if your has a wing collar. Bow ties are not worn with morning wear.

* Waistcoat - A black waistcoat is always acceptable but grey is more usual these days. Other coloured and patterned waistcoats are ver more popular and most acceptable.

* Socks - Black silk or fine cotton are recommended.

* Shoes - Black only. Preferably lace-up.

EVENING WEAR WITH TAILS

* Shirt - White with stiff wing collar. The stiff or semi-stiff front and cuffs are made of a hand pleated laid on fabric or marcella pique. Traditionally the front of the shirt is closed with two or three dress studs in black or gold, or alternativelythe shirt should be styled with a pleated fly front. The cuff is closed with links.

* Tie - Made from marcella pique either ready tied or to-tie. No buckles, clips or elastic should show. Ideally the span of the bow tie should equal the span of the wing collar and the depth of the bow tie should approximate to the depth of the collar.

* Waistcoat - Should be made from white marcella pique, single breasted with lapels and three or four-button front. Your waistcoat should appear slightly above your cut away jacket. Waistcoats are normally backless but garments with full backs are not unusual.

* Socks - Black silk or fine cotton are recommended.

* Shoes - Black patent leather lace-up or slip-on.

* Handkerchief - Black or white silk to be worn in breast pocket.

* Scarf - White silk with hand knotted fringe.

EVENING WEAR WITH DINNER SUIT/TUXEDO

* Shirt - A wide variety of shirts can be worn with a dinner jacket from a plain silk in a natural shade to pleat fronted and hand pleated, ribbed or embroidered variations.

* Collars are also acceptable - Collars can be wing or turn-down - Cuffs should always be double - Black dress studs rather than buttons are currently fashionable for the front of dress shirts - If buttons are used they are normally hidden by a fly front

* Tie - Black silk bows are always acceptable especially at very formal affairs. For more lively functions anything goes and you have a wonderful selection to choose from at BLACKTIE.

* Cummerbund - Should be pleated with a small pocket in the pleat. Usually the cummerbund matches the bow tie. Cummerbunds or waistcoats look well when worn over shirts with laid-on fronts - they succesfully bridge the gap between the bottom of the shirt front and the trouser band.

* Waistcoats - For very formal occasions your waistcoat should be made from a similar fabric to the suit or from a black satin. For less formal occasions any design is acceptable either with a black tie or one to match the waistcoat.

* Socks - Black silk or fine cotton are recommended.

* Shoes - Black patent leather lace-up or slip-on.

* Handkerchief - White silk or a design to match your cummerbund and bow
